Classifying and Sorting as a foundation for Mathematical thinking!"Common everyday activities that involve sorting are the beginning concepts of children developing math skills ~ Angela Harris (2013)

What does this mean?
Classifying and sorting are naturally interesting to children from a very early age. Sorting and classifying teaches children about attributes and relationships as well as promoting logical thinking and applying rules, it gives them the foundations for geometry and algebra. Firstly children will learn how to compare objects then they will continue on and classify them.. Think of when you were young and enjoyed collecting items, whether it was books, coins or erasers. This is an important skill for children to learn in maths as well as in science. Learning theorists believe that a large part of cognitive development in young children is driven by classification. This in kindergarten begins with ideas of making, describing and comparing (J. M. Shaw). These are also practical, everyday activities that you can start at home and begin introducing these concepts. HOW? The following are some tips that you can do at home to encourage your children to begin the development of sorting and classifying. TOP TEN TIPS FOR CLASSIFYING AND SORTING AT HOME!
